St. Padre Pio | The Wounds of Christ Statue

When I set out to sculpt Padre Pio, I didn't want to create another traditional image of the saint. I wanted to capture a moment that few people know about, one that reveals both the depth of his suffering and the beauty of his trust in Christ.

According to those who knew him, including St. Pope John Paul II, Padre Pio revealed that the wound on his shoulder from mystically sharing in Christ's carrying of the Cross caused him more pain than even the visible stigmata on his hands and feet. Yet this wound remained hidden from nearly everyone.

That story stayed with me.

My idea for this sculpture was to imagine Padre Pio alone in his simple friary cell, quietly tending to this hidden wound after a long day. A basin of water mixed with blood rests beside him along with the cloth he has been using to clean the wound. His robe is gently pulled aside, revealing the injury that caused him such tremendous suffering.

But the moment I wanted to capture wasn't simply one of pain.

Overcome by the intensity of his suffering, Padre Pio pauses, reaches for his rosary, and begins praying the Fourth Sorrowful Mystery, The Carrying of the Cross. As he reflects on Christ bearing His Cross to Calvary, he offers his own suffering back to God. His expression is one of profound physical agony, but also complete spiritual surrender.

To me, this scene beautifully captures who Padre Pio was. He never wasted his suffering. He transformed it into prayer.

Each statue is printed in high quality resin from a precise 3D scan of my original hand sculpted work. Every detail of the original sculpture has been faithfully preserved, from the folds of his habit to the emotion in his face.

My hope is that this sculpture becomes more than a piece of religious art. I hope it serves as a reminder that our own crosses, when united with Christ's, can become instruments of grace.
