The Agony Crucifix (20" Cross) (Homemade)
The Agony Crucifix (20” Cross)
This crucifix is deeply personal — a work born from devotion, memory, and longing. Inspired by the crucifix that hangs at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama, it has its roots in my childhood. When I was about eight years old, a friend returned from the shrine with photographs, and among them was this crucifix. I was immediately captivated by it. For years I searched for a replica of that exact image of Christ, but none could be found. At last, after many years, I resolved to sculpt one myself — and now, I am humbled to share it with you.
This crucifix uniquely captures the torment of the Passion, not only in Christ’s suffering body, but especially in His sacred face. Unlike many images that emphasize physical pain, this figure communicates something deeper: the agony of the heart. His expression does not merely reflect the cruelty of the nails or the crown, but the weight of betrayal, abandonment, and the burden of the world’s sin. This is why it bears the name The Agony Crucifix.
The corpus was originally sculpted in clay, then faithfully preserved through 3D scanning and resin printing. Each figure is hand-painted with prayerful care, highlighting the details.
The figure is mounted to a cross of reclaimed wood, chosen not only for its strength and beauty but also its profound symbolism: once discarded or forgotten, the wood is given new life by carrying the image of Christ. In this, it becomes a reflection of our own redemption, as God restores us from death to life in Him.
Above His head rests the titulus, the traditional sign inscribed in three languages — Hebrew, Greek, and Latin — declaring, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” These three tongues, representing faith, reason, and power, proclaim to the whole world the kingship of Christ crucified.
The cross measures 20” tall by 10” wide, making it a striking devotional piece for the home, chapel, or as a meaningful gift.
Cross Size:
20” x 10”
Current Lead Time:
