The Crucifix of Limpias
Inspired by the Miraculous Crucifix of Limpias, Spain
There are certain images of Christ that stay with us long after we have looked away. The Crucifix of Limpias is one of those images for me. I have been commissioned to recreate this particular crucifix multiple times, and after receiving those requests, I am finally making a version available through Memento Christi for others to bring into their homes and prayer lives.
My hope is that this crucifix does more than remind us of Christ's suffering. I want it to draw us into the mystery of His sacrifice and help us contemplate the immeasurable love that led Him to the Cross.
A Crucifix with a Remarkable History
The original image, known as the Santo Cristo de la Agonía, or the Holy Christ of the Agony, is venerated in the Church of Saint Peter in Limpias, Spain. Its history is associated with reports of extraordinary events dating back centuries, including a tradition connected to a dangerous flood in Cádiz in 1755. The image eventually became the focus of widespread devotion in Limpias.
In 1919, reports spread that witnesses had seen the figure of Christ move His eyes and mouth, appear to change color, and even perspire. These reported manifestations drew pilgrims from around the world, and accounts of healings and conversions further strengthened devotion to the image.
Whether one is familiar with this history or encountering it for the first time, I think the enduring appeal of the Crucifix of Limpias lies in the image itself: Christ in His agony, offering Himself completely for our salvation.
The Love Behind the Suffering
What draws me most to this image is Christ's gaze lifted toward Heaven. His body bears the marks of terrible suffering, yet His expression conveys something beyond physical agony. There is a profound sense of love, trust, and unwavering devotion to the Father.
I wanted to preserve that quality in this reproduction. Christ is not simply enduring the final moments of His earthly life. He is freely offering Himself for us, in perfect obedience to the Father and in love for every soul He came to save.
When I look at this crucifix, I am reminded that the Cross was not merely something Christ endured. It was the supreme act of love through which He gave Himself for us. His suffering reveals the seriousness of sin, but even more, it reveals the extraordinary lengths to which God has gone to redeem us.
My hope is that this image becomes a reminder to pause, look upon Christ, and remember what He has done for us. In moments of suffering, discouragement, or spiritual dryness, may it help turn our hearts back to the One who loved us first and continues to love us without reservation.
Made with Care, for Your Home and Prayer
Each Crucifix of Limpias features a finely detailed resin corpus, individually hand-painted by me and mounted on a cross made from reclaimed and repurposed wood. This version makes the image available in a durable, accessible format while preserving the details and expression that make the original so compelling.
I have always believed that religious art should be more than decoration. It should help direct our attention toward the realities of our faith and give us something tangible to return to in prayer. Whether displayed in a home prayer corner, bedroom, living room, or personal chapel, I hope this crucifix serves as a lasting reminder of Christ's Passion and His unfailing love.

A Note About the Wood
I make my crosses using reclaimed and repurposed wood. Because I work with the materials available to me, variations in wood species, grain, texture, color, and overall appearance are to be expected. Each piece may include natural and man-made characteristics such as knots, nail holes, markings, wear, blemishes, or remnants of the wood's former use.
I do not consider these features imperfections. Rather, I believe they tell the story of the material's past and contribute to the unique character, authenticity, and individuality of every cross. Your crucifix will have its own distinct appearance, and the wood may differ in tone or finish from the photographs shown.
A Final Word
Thank you for considering a piece of my work for your home and prayer life. Every crucifix I make is an opportunity to share an image of Christ that has moved me personally, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make this particular devotion available to more people.
My prayer is that the Crucifix of Limpias will invite you to spend time with our Lord, contemplate the depth of His Passion, and never lose sight of the love that held Him to the Cross.
May it always remind you of the One who gave everything for you.
