The Surrender Crucifix

I created this crucifix to offer a more graphic depiction of the suffering Christ endured during His Passion. My intention was to portray the physical agony of the Crucifixion with a level of detail that invites deeper contemplation of our Lord’s wounds and the immense sacrifice He made for us.

This piece features a hyper-realistic, almost hyperbolic portrayal of Christ’s suffering, including exposed ribs and spinal features, visible abdominal trauma, a bruised and swollen face, and extensive lacerations and lesions across His body. I wanted to depict the severity of His wounds without losing sight of the dignity of our Lord or the humanity of the man who bore them.

For me, the most important part of this crucifix is not simply the severity of the wounds, but the expression on Christ’s face. Even amid such terrible suffering, His expression retains a sense of compassion, love, and faithful surrender to the Father. I wanted to find a balance between an unflinching portrayal of the physical damage Christ endured and a reverent depiction of the love that carried Him through it.

This crucifix is not intended to shock or sensationalize Christ’s suffering. Rather, I hope it serves as an invitation to prayer: a reminder that the wounds we contemplate are not merely the marks of a terrible death, but the wounds He willingly endured out of love for us. My hope is that this piece helps draw the viewer more deeply into the mystery of the Passion and into gratitude for the immeasurable love of Christ.

  • Cross dimensions: Approximately 20 inches tall by 10 inches wide.

  • Handmade to order: Each crucifix is individually made and hand-painted by me. Because every piece is made to order, fulfillment and shipping times may vary. I appreciate your patience as I give each crucifix the time and attention it deserves.

  • Reclaimed hardwood: I make my crosses using reclaimed and repurposed hardwood. Because I work with the wood available to me, the color, grain, texture, and overall appearance of the cross may vary from one piece to another. These natural differences are part of what makes each crucifix unique.

Thank you for allowing my work to become part of your home and prayer life. My hope is that this crucifix serves as a lasting reminder of Christ’s Passion, His unfailing love, and the hope we find in Him.
